Signal Maintenance Testing Handbook Initial

Introduction

This course is designed to show trainees how to use the Signal Maintenance Testing Handbook when undertaking testing/replacement of signalling equipment. Trainees attending this course will develop their skills and knowledge to conduct testing activities as laid down in the Signal Maintenance Testing Handbook.

This will be to the re-released Issue 4 version of the Handbook.

Aim

The aim of this course is for trainees to become conversant in the use of the Signal Maintenance Testing Handbook. The competencies that can be certified are:

Core Skills Testing
Cable & Wire Testing
Earth Testing
Aspect Testing
Point Testing
Block Testing (optional)
Produce a new Maintenance Test Plan
Diversion of a Circuit
TPWS (subject to proof of prior learning)

Objectives

On successful completion of the course the candidate will be able to:

Carry  out defined tests as specified in SMTH
Follow and apply the testing procedures as specified in SMTH
Deal with and correctly complete SMT documentation as specified in SMTH

Who Should Attend

Any person capable of leading a Signal Maintenance and Faulting team as well as Technical Support staff, Supervisors, Managers,  Signal Maintenance Engineers, Signal Works Installers, or any other person meeting the entry requirements.

Prerequisites

Trainees should have experience of assisting with fault finding on signalling equipment and must be competent in:

Features

This course consists of practical sessions reinforced with classroom theory work. Trainees will gain hands on practical experience utilising our comprehensive and dedicated Testing room. This facility allows for the use of a simulated environment with the ability to apply faults to all of the equipment.

All SMT defined tests can be practiced on our equipment, which includes a fully functional Absolute Block system with Block Recovery testing (block recovery winder NOT timer). Our Absolute Block set up also allows for the testing of Type 1 and Type 2 systems.

Learning Approach

Classroom theory sessions using visual aids, practical demonstrations with fault finding sessions
and testing scenarios

Assessment

A theory assessment will be held at the end of week 1 to test the trainees Core skills knowledge (a pass mark is required to continue with week 2). Successful trainees will then be assessed on their practical skills in carrying out the defined tests and the correct completion of documentation.

Successful Trainees will leave with a certificate of competence detailing the elements passed. This certificate is not valid unless it has been signed by the Assessor and countersigned by the trainees line manager.
