Appointed Person

Introduction

Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, employees are required to make adequate and appropriate arrangements for first aid in the workplace. In short this means providing 'suitable and sufficient' first aid equipment, facilities, procedures and trained personnel.

An 'appointed person' is someone who has been appointed within a company to take charge in an emergency and summon the emergency services if required. They can also have the responsibility for the safe keeping of the accident book and looking after the first aid equipment. Although they are not a substitute for a qualified first aider, the HSE recommends that an appointed person should receive some first aid training.
