Basic Mechanical Signalling

Introduction

Delegates attending this course will develop their skills and knowledge to conduct maintenance, faulting, installation and testing activities on mechanical signalling equipment as used in the UK . It is ideal for candidates whose main activity involves maintenance, faulting or renewal, of mechanical signalling equipment.

 Objectives

On successful completion of the course candidates will be able to:

Have an insight into the history of Mechanical Signalling from 1850 to present day

Understand how semaphore signals and mechanical shunt signals are operated and detected.

Run, joint and create shackles for signal wires.

Maintain signal wire runs from signal box to signalling equipment.

Understand how mechanical points are operated, locked, detected and maintained.

Adjust and set up a mechanical set of points

Make point adjustments using adjustable cranks

Measure, cut and adjust a mechanical facing point lock

Understand the principles and installation of rod run compensators.

Carry out facing point lock and detection tests on mechanical points, point machines and clamp locks.

Understand the use and operation of locks and controllers.

Understand the operation and principles of mechanical level crossing gates.

Who Should Attend

Technicians whose work involves the maintenance / faulting and installation of mechanical signalling equipment and who need a basic knowledge to undertake these duties

Prerequisites

Candidates would benefit from having some experience of working on mechanical equipment prior to attending this course.

Features

Provides knowledge for all forms of mechanical signalling equipment. The course allows time for the candidate to gain experience of hands on setting up and testing of points and signals in a safe area. Candidates will also be required to practically cut and correctly install/adjust a mechanical facing point lock stretcher and bolt. The S.M.S procedures for the equipment can also be practiced.

Learning Approach

Classroom theory sessions using visual aids, and practical demonstrations with hands on learning of mechanical points, mechanical facing point locks and mechanical signals.

Assessment

Written test paper plus ongoing practical assessments throughout the course

Duration:          5 days

Further Courses
