Basic Railway Signalling

Introduction

The aim of this course is to introduce the trainees to the basic principles of Railway Signalling as used in the UK on the Main Lines.

Objectives

On successful completion of the course the candidate will be able to:

Describe the operation of a simple DC Track Circuit
Explain the interaction between the Track Circuit and the Signalling system
State the Aspect sequence of 2, 3 and 4 Aspect signalling systems
Define a Block section
Define Absolute Block Working
Define Service Braking Distance
Explain the headway characteristics of a three aspect signalling system
Show how using a four aspect signalling system can reduce the headway

Who Should Attend

Candidates whose work involves the maintenance/faulting and installation of track circuits.
