Track Circuit Principles

Introduction

The aims of this course is to give the candidates an overview of how track circuits work and the safety implications involved when setting up and adjusting track circuits.

Objectives

On successful completion of the course the candidate will be able to:

Identify the main components of a simple DC track circuit
Identify the main components of a simple AC track circuit
Describe the similarities between all track circuits
State the purpose of a track circuit
State the importance of the Drop Shunt test
Explain the effects that changing ballast resistance has on a track circuit
