AC Track Circuits


Delegates attending this course will develop their skills and knowledge to conduct maintenance, faulting and testing activities on 50Hz AC track circuits efficiently and effectively. This course covers single rail and double rail 50Hz AC track circuits.

Course Objectives

On successful completion of the course the candidate will be able to:

  • Explain the operation and principles of single & double rail 50Hz AC track circuits
  • Identify the main components of 50Hz AC track circuit
  • Identify the different configurations of 50Hz AC track circuits
  • Identify ‘Bonding Plan’ symbols
  • Perform routine servicing of 50Hz AC track circuits in accordance with the current SMS and complete the relevant documentation
  • Use test equipment specific to 50Hz AC
  • Carry out a full test and interpret test results to identify possible faults at an early stage
  • Identify Infrastructure conditions that may effect correct operation of 50Hz AC track circuits
  • Carry out basic fault finding activities
  • Fault diagnosis and rectification to a 50Hz AC track circuit using a systematic approach
  • Determine whether a failure is ‘wrong-side’ or ‘right-side’
  • Locate and rectify faults
  • Replace specific items of 50Hz AC track circuit equipment

Personal Protective Equipment

Full PPE is required for this course. All delegates are required to bring:

  • Protective “all orange” high Visibility Clothing to Network Rail Standard
  • Safety Footwear (Boots) to Network Rail Standard
  • Safety Helmet (white/blue) to Network Rail Standard


Written test paper plus practical assessments (both of which must be passed to receive a certificate)
